Through the initial research phases, I considered personalities carefully.

 

It was important to base ideas on the narrative required to drive the story (for instance one of the trio needs to be impulsive enough to kick the puffball mushroom). What character traits would be engaging and believable? All the while I also tried to be true to the genre.

The graphic novel would be aimed at my own age demographic, so in this instance, my preferences could go some way to informing the story. Equally, I would of course spend time researching my target audience if I didn't happen to be part of that demographic.

The initial sketches came after considering personalities, and the names created themselves, thereafter:

• Cynthia
  Description: Approximately 17-years-old, 5ft, wiry build, blond, shoulder-length straight hair, piercing blue eyes. 
  Background: Alcoholic Dad, mom moved out.
  Personality: INTJ, waspish, catty, tough exterior but cares deeply for her close friends. 
   

• Sebastian/Bastian 
  Description: Just turned 17-years-old, 5ft 7-inches, skinny, brown middle-length hair, brown eyes. 
  Background: Been through the foster home system, readers are not quite sure how that transpired.  
  Personality: INFJ, quietly spoken and thoughtful - but not shy such that he doesn't speak his mind. Introspective, introvert, intelligent.

• Samuel/Sam
  Description: Approximately 18-years-old, 5ft 10-inches.  
  Background: Somewhat privileged, but with overbearing parents.
  Personality: ENTP, openly extraverted, witty, darkly funny, sometimes impulsive.
